So, anyhoo, the project continues. I just got some more Argon so my welds are back to their normal, amateur level. They were bizarrely disfigured the last time around, but that’s ok for tacking.

The thing is super rigid, now that I’ve completed all the bracing. I’m seeing some light at the end o’ the tunnel.

One thing that is bugging me is how the rack shortened slightly as the bracing was welded in place. I expected and planned for it somewhat, but it shrunk a little beyond my expectations. No biggie, well within tolerances and it even looks a little better.

You might be able to see how low profile it is from the images. This is really what I was going for. Better for aerodynamics and looks the biz. I saw another Foz today that had a big ol’ basket on top and it really did not look right to me.

I never thought I would ever see a ski rack that I wanted before, but now I do. That thing is sweet.

Any way to bolt it straight to the car? For stiffness, of course.

Looking good. Triangles are your friends.

Nicely done.

When you were designing it, did you actually measure out all the angled cuts that you needed to make, or just sort of winged it, and cut things to fit?

A bit of both. I had an overall footprint that I wanted and it’s actually made up of different wall thickness square tubing, so there was a lot of pre-planning, but then I wanted some more bracing later, so I winged it. I did make sure that there was room for the possible bracing from the beginning, I just wasn't sure how it would go exactly.

Neat. Thanks for sharing!

I’ve been toying around with the idea of learning to do stuff with carbon fiber. I think a roof-top carrier would be totally awesome to make. It’d be a big enough project that it would be challenging, but small enough that it seems doable.

I originally wanted to do it out of carbon, but there’s a lot of prep with that. I’m planning to do some carbon projects this year like a seat and front fenders. We’ll see what I have time for. I may still make a carbon rack someday.

When you do the carbon seat/fenders, please post about it! I’d be most curious to see how it goes.
